The American War of Independence has a lot to offer wargamers, especially those on a budget. I`m glad to see a renaissance of sorts for this period in recent months and if you are thinking of becoming the Da Vinci of AWI wargaming at your local club, then let The Whites of Their Eyes be your brush and your tabletop be your canvas. This publication by Bruce McFarlane from the stables of the Canadian Wargames Group, is a compleat guide to the AWI which is simply brilliant. Any potential wargames author should find "Whites . . ." an object lesson in how to write a publication aimed at our hobby. Like all of Bruce`s projects The Whites of Their Eyes is thoughtfully put together. Everything the complete novice or cynical veteran gamer could want to know to get them started gaming the American Revolution is included. The first part covers a brief outline of the history, the tactics, uniforms and flags. Next there are 10 major battles from Bunker Hill to Yorktown, a solo Lexington and Concord game, a boardgame based on the siege of Quebec with full colour computer generated maps, and a 1776-1779 campaign game with A3 map and full colour illustrated counters. To round it all off, Bruce provides a figure tally at the back which details exactly how many of each model figure you will require to fight every battle covered in the volume. Each of the scenarios has a brief history, full orbats with no. of figures per unit and morale ratings. There are plenty of special rules with each scenario to capture the flavour of the real battle and a full page detailed map of how your tabletop should look to represent the battlefield. Excellent stuff. Even if you already have a favourite set of AWI rules, I strongly recommend that you purchase this guide book as the scenarios can be easily converted to fit in with what you have. Note though, that full battle rules are NOT included in this volume as it assumes (and why not) that you already possess one of the two previous volumes, Habitants & Highlanders or Rockets Red Glare. Whites of Their Eyes - 68 page A4 card cover booklet. Two pull-out colour maps/gameboards and two pages of illustrated full colour counters.
