For God, King and Country, published by the Canadian Wargamers Group is Bruce McFarlane`s 7th guidebook aimed at miniature wargamers. This time Bruce takes a look at the English Civil Wars in his now familiar style. Within the 68 A4 pages he`s managed to pack chapters on the history of the war, organisations, uniforms and standards, strategy and tactics; as well as the For God, King and Country miniatures rules system, 10 full scenarios and an ECW Grand Campaign. The rules themselves make up just 6 pages of this book. Simple but very effective, they focus on the grand tactical level rather than the common minutiae of X number of muskets vs XX number of Light Medium Unwashed pikemen at a range of 42`7". Scales :? Well, figures 1:50 men, ground 1":50 yards, turn 1:15 minutes. 10 sided dice are used throughout. Troops are mounted on stands which are grouped into formations depending upon the tactical "system" employed, such as the 'Swedish' formations shown above. A 'typical' Regiment has four stands of pikes and 4 to 8 stands of musketeers. The scenarios not only reflect the big set-piece battles such as Edgehill, Marston Moor, and Naseby, but encounters such as Cropredy Bridge, Aberdeen, Tippermuir, Dunbar, Worchester and an excellent solo game of Preston. The final scenario is Lutzen, which the rules make very playable indeed. Once you`ve read through the scenarios given, which include special rules where appropriate, it`s easy to use them as a basis to sit down and create a game for any ECW battle of you choice. For God, King, and County has made me dust off my 6mm ECW/TYW and wish I`d never sold the 15`s. $23 US inc. postage from Box 1725, Station "M", Calgary, Alberta,CANADA T2P 2LZ (http://www.agt.net/public/cwgroup/cwghome.html) Back to The Gauntlet No. 16 Table of Contents Back to The Gauntlet List of Issues Back to Master Magazine List © Copyright 1999 by Craig Martelle Publications This article appears in MagWeb (Magazine Web) on the Internet World Wide Web.
