Saving Private Ryan

Bridge at Ramelle

by Greg Savvinos

The Bridge at Ramelle which appeared in Gauntlet No.14 seems to have hit a cord with many of you, judging by the number of requests I`ve received since to reproduce a map of the fictional ville of Ramelle.

The illustration is based upon the actual production design plans used for the movie set. I have not gone overboard on detail in order to encourage you to create your own interpretation and not be hampered by 'having to' reproduce Ramelle, brick by brick.

You may be interested to note that many of the buildings in the film were simply dressed fascias and unless you plan a boring slog from house to house, there`s no reason for you not to dress your wargames table in a similar manner.

This reminds me of a Bridge Too Far game from SALUTE `81 or `82, where Arnhem was constructed from those snap together German building kits for model railways. Rather rather than making them whole, the players had split the models in half, and mounted the two halves lining the streets as separate buildings. Each city block was a shell, allowing access to internal floors from which our plucky British Paratroopers could make their gallant if ultimately doomed stand.

If you do want to build your table from scratch, or simply to identify it more with the movie, then I recommend Saving Private Ryan : The Men. The Mission. The Movie. A photographic anthology by David James (published by Boxtree at £ 12.99, isbn 0-7522-1348-2). Alternatively, save your money for the video, which should be out in the next few months - but don`t wear out that pause button.
