Well, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN - What a film ! See my tribute to the movie later on. (-ed note: this is the review run in last issue of the US Edition) Common sense prevailed in the Gauntlet household this summer. Uncharacteristically, I decided enough was enough and there were too many wargame armies to finish without starting on Landesknechts. A good job too as I would be suffering a bad case of indigestion at this moment. In fact Mathew Sparkes coined a term for having too many bare castings in your possession - 'Lead Shock'. His theory is that it`s lovely to have lots of unpainted figures, but when you look at them the task ahead seems so daunting, you never get round to painting them. I`ve taken up Mathew`s idea of buying figures in smaller quantities. Yes it works out a little more expensive BUT you are more likely to whip a coat of paint on and get some games in. In theory I could spend around £ 30 a month on bare castings, but I`ve decided to spend the money more wisely on having figures painted for me. Err, with one exception that is, and that`s Gripping Beasts` new Arthurians and early Saxons. The Arthurians will easily double as Late Romans and the dismounted 'Knights', will be used as dismounted Late Roman Cavalry - forgotten by other manufacturers but a key element of a steady Roman battle-line, used extensively in the field by Narses, and suggested by the Strategikon. Unintentionally this issue has gained an ostensibly Renaissance theme, with two excellent articles from Ken Baggaley - which can easily be converted to other historical periods. Also, my apologies for changing the Korean War scenario at the last minute. I found the amount of info I had to include for the Piquet/Point of Attack scenario on the Hwachon Dam, represented a small book. Piquet is one of those lifestyle rulesets, where to get the most out of it, you have to go into cloisters, take up holy orders and pray for thanks to the authors. Anyway, if you`re not keen on Korea, no worries; replace the Chinese with Japs or VC to taste. Again, thanks to everyone who has given me support over the past months - Cheers Back to The Gauntlet No. 14 Table of Contents Back to The Gauntlet List of Issues Back to Master Magazine List © Copyright 1998 by Craig Martelle Publications This article appears in MagWeb (Magazine Web) on the Internet World Wide Web.
