15mm Medieval Italian Campaign

reviewed by Mark Hannam

Just two words sum up this range of 15mm medieval soldiery: "BUY THEM". Whilst some are very definitely Italian with padded turbans around their helmets etc, the widespread use of Italian armour styles means that the majority can fit quite happily into most European armies from 1430-1490.

The figures come in packs of eight Infantry with mixed armour and headdress, or four cavalry with assorted prices at 1.10. They blend in well with Minifigs and Wargames Foundry, but are for superior in detail and have that certain flair you would expect from an Italian designer. Looking at the CC2 cavalry pack for instance, we find knights representing those depicted on Uccello's famous and much reproduced painting of the Rout of Son Romano. One of the "personality" sets includes the condottieri Niccolo de Tolentino (he's the one in the colourful chef's hat from the same painting).

At the time of writing , the Infantry have 6 packs including croesbowmen, halberdlers, pikemen and spear/pavaissier types. The cavalry include nobles, knights, light cavalry (heavy by other nations standards), Hungarian horse archers and personalities. You have to supply your own pikes, whilst the lances supplied with the cavalry are far too thin to be of any use, use wire for these too. Cameron Robinson of FREIKORPS 15, who's importing these figures tells me that customer demand can shape how this range develops, so if you're hankering for some Venetian colonial archers, get writing. Send for more details to FREIKORPS 15, 25 Princetown Road, Bangor, Co Down BT20 3TA, Northern Ireland.

Anyone likely to be Interested in the Condottieri may like to know that Issue No. 10 of the Hobilar has notes on Italian Infantry, flags and condottieri army lists suitable for the POLEAXED wargames rules. Medieval TACTICA also has condottieri army lists and campaign rules. D.B.A. army lists can be found in Wargames Illustrated No.71, August 1993.
