General Advance

Commander's Character

by Michael Gray

The following brief rules are designed to take the predictability away (after all you know what they're going to do), from the other generals in your tabletop army. Or, if you play solo they can determine the reactions of the opposing commanders too.

Bravest of the Brave

First of all lets establish the general's character using percentage dice:

    1 to 5 = RASH
    6 to 30 = BRAVE
    31 to 70 = AVERAGE
    71 to 95 CAUTIOUS
    96 to 100 = TIMID

A Place of Honour?

To find the position of a general at the beginning of the game, consult the Generals Reaction Chart below. The dice score will determine the position thus:

A = Centre front in the main bollleline exposed to enemy fire.
B = Just behind the rear of the frontline.
C= in the best position that is safe to observe the battle, (on a hill etc.).
D = Ten Inches behind the centre of the frontline.
E = Standing centre on the base line at the rear of the table.

Generals Reaction Chart

A general's reactions does not have to lake place each bound, they should only be checked for the following reasons:

    1. Own troops routing or withdrawing.
    2. Enemy attacking within 6 Inches.
    3. Enemy troops routing or withdrawing.

The general will react in one of five ways depending on the percentage dice score. All generals character types can react to all five, but there is some variation in their chances.

ReactionRASHBRAVEAVERAGECAUTIOUSTIMID
A1 to 351 to 301 to 201 to 151 to 10
B36 to 6031 to 5521 to 4016 to 3011 to 25
C61 to 8056 to 7541 to 6031 to 5026 to 45
D81 to 9576 to 9061 to 8051 to 7546 to 70
E96 to 10091 to 10081 to 10076 to 10071 to 100

Reactions

A = Moves to the most stricken unit.
This will generally mean one that is nearest to the enemy, attacking or retreating will either rally them or give them the Impetus to make a charge.

B = Advance to the centre of the frontline.
If the figure is already in that position there is no change.

C = Stand and do nothing.

D = Orders up a unit of reinforcements.

E = Rides to the rear.
Should this take the general's figure off the table, then it will not return.
