Good News and Bad News

by Anne F. Jaffe

You're familiar with the good news and bad news joke where you tell a story about some poor guy named Joe Smith who's lost his wife and children, house and life savings, and the " punch line" goes, "and then there's the bad news, Mr. Smith..."

Think of GAME NEWS as Joe Smith. I want to tell you a story. The good news in our case is good news. Our January issue is scheduled to appear in Waldenbooks. Because this kind of improved distribution creates its own headaches, plans were underway to print our first anniversary issue as a large double issue, March/ April. We felt that any confusion the double issue caused would be temporary and our readers, being the intelligent sort, would cope well. The combined date for the issue gives the magazine a longer sale time in the new outlets, while maintaining our monthly schedule. In addition, we would start our second year with a nice issue. We also have a new printer, Waverly Press, in Easton, Maryland. Waverly will save us some money by printing the magazine in a more efficient way. Good news, indeed.

And then there's the bad news, Mr. Smith. As I mentioned earlier, you readers are the kind of people that notice things, like the missing November issue. In order for us to stay in business, we keep our expenses as low as we can without jeopardizing the quality of the magazine. Our new printer will help us do that. Unfortunately, the transition from one printer to another did not proceed smoothly.

The November issue could have appeared after the December one. That didn't make a lot of sense to us, so we decided not to print an issue in November.

To cope with the "bad news," we plan the following: the material in the November issue will be published, as soon as we can work it in, and subscribers will have an issue added to their subscriptions.

GAME NEWS will continue to appear every month, and the confusion surrounding November and March/April issues will subside quickly.

I have to admit, though, I'm finding it a lot easier to identify with Joe Smith these days.
