Microprose Software Inc. released a submarine simulation game called Silent Service. The game is a simulation of World Wax II submarine combat in the Pacific Theater. Silent Service is available for the Commodore 64 and the Apple family computers.

You are reading an award-winning magazine! At Origins the notorious Academy of Game Critics presented the fourth annual Critics Guild Awards in categories such as Worst Art, Worst Board Game ... Am I making my point? We've been advised by an attorney not to print any other winners, but would like to note that GAME NEWS won in the following category: The Covetted Maggot Upchuck Award for the cartoon appearing on page 3 of the May issue.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram publishes a monthly feature which lists the best-selling fantasy games and supplements, using sales figures compiled by the staff of the four Fantastic Worlds Book Store locations in Texas. Fantastic Worlds specializes in comic books; science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction; plastic model kits; and role-playing games. The stores were noted in the "Books" feature of the August, 1985 issue of Playboy.

Frank Chadwick of Game Designers' Workshop recently announced in a company newsletter that the Command Decision demonstration games that he's run at conventions should be published by the year's end. The basic rules will cover WWII. WWII miniatures groups that game regularly can contact Game Designers' Workshop if interested in playtesting. Game Designers' Workshop, P.O. High tech driver's ed. Over 200 students enrolled in one Connecticut high school's driver education course will learn how to drive using a computer software program, Keys to Responsible Driving, which is published by CBS Software. Reviewed by driver education and safety experts at the National Safety Council and American Automobile Association, Keys to Responsible Driving is designed to help students become safe, defensive and licensed drivers.

Fans of Nuclear Armageddon can now get three versions of the game: Third World (under $40), Emerging Nations (approximately $100), and Super Power ($135). Play is identical for all versions, and upgrading kits are available.

Commodore users can now play two more war games on their computers. Krentek Software recently released Commodore versions of Napoleon at Waterloo and Rome and the Barbarians.

Tired of the same old night life? How about spending some "evenings of terror with Elvira?" Pacesetter Limited is featuring the syndicated television horror-movie hostess Elvira in the book Evenings of Terror with Elvira which contains nine adventures for use with the Chill role-playing game. Elvira introduces each adventure with a photograph and short narrative.

Mayfair Games Inc. has four new adventures for the DC Heroes RolePlaying Game: Blood Feud by Jeff O'Hare, Batman by Mike Stackpole, Wheel of Destruction by Matt Costello, and Project Prometheus by Greg Gorden.

The Companions Inc. has released a new version of Behind Enemy Lines, the World War II role-playing game originally published by FASA Corporation. The new version has been revised and edited to make play faster and more accurate.

Bill Gabriel will replace Alan Emrich as editor of The Continuing Saga newsletter which is published by Diverse Talents Inc.

Late News

Lou Zocchi of Gamescience Inc. and Zocchi Distributors announced that even if Hurricane Elena blew off the roof of the warehouse, business will continue with a few delays. If you have an order in process with them and don't hear from them in a reasonable amount of time, contact them. There was some damage to the records.

The Compleat Strategist and The Avalon Hill Game Company have a very nice one page summary of the effects of Advanced Squad Leader on the older games: Squad Leader, Cross of Iron, Crescendo of Boom, and GI Anvil of Victory. The memo states: "Original Squad Leader may never become obsolete because of its programmed learning approach which makes it easier for beginners to learn. We will continue to recommend that newcomers start with Squad Leader before graduating to Advanced Squad Leader."

DC Heroes fans can now role-play using lead miniatures which axe manufactured by Grenadier Models Inc. for Mayfair Games Inc. Two series axe planned: Justice League of America and Teen Titans. Each will include six heroes and four villains.
