There are a variety of great adhesives for doing mounting. If you are inexperienced, I think the best adhesive would be one called Spray Mount, from 3M. It's effectively rubber cement in a spray (though a bit different chemically): it produces a bond that is strong and durable, but is also forgiving and can be peeled up if desired. This flexibility gives you the opportunity to mount the map, but then peel it back up and reposition it when you realize that you've got it a bit crooked. You can do it repeatedly until you get it right. If you're more comfortable that you're going to get it right the first time and want a truly permanent (and I mean seriously permanent -- it'll probably tear layers off the paper before it breaks at the bond), you can use 3M's Super 77. I don't recommend it for the inexperienced, though. Just remove the creases from you map as best you can (backfolding, etc.), lay it face-down on some newspapers, and give the back a nice, even coat of Spray Mount. No need to let it set (in fact you shouldn't let it set): just pick it up, pick a corner of your hard board and line up the corner and edges, rolling the map down onto the board. Smooth it down with your fingers or a scrap of paper. If there's any excess glue along the edges of the map kind of "peeking" out you can just rub it off with your fingers (like rubber cement).
