In Praise of Ambush!

Solo

by Michael Svellov

I always enjoyed Ambush! (VG). It's one of my favorites. And it makes an excellent co-operative two-player game as well: split the platoon into two and give each group a leader. Players must be within vision of each other to communicate (hand signals) unless they have radios. Great fun.

Some other solo games that I have but have never gotten around to trying are Mosby's Raiders (VG), Patton's Best (TAHGC). I'd also not mind getting a copy of Raid on St. Nazaire (TAHGC), but I haven't located one yet.

I was never fond of Mosby - maybe because the theme didn't attract me. Patton's Best is much better than B17, which I always thought lacked real decisions - just roll the dice and hope for the best. In Patton you need to have the right type of ammo at the right moment plus you never know whether that tank you sensed is a Tiger or not.

I can also recommend Raid of St. Nazaire and Peleponnesian War (VG) was especially attractive due to the winning criteria: whenever you are playing better than the dummy opponent (which isn't that hard) are the roles reversed, so effectively are you playing against yourself. And then are there the two Richard Berg games Geronimo and Blackbeard.
