There's a play style of taking very few chances on colonies. I don't think I've ever attempted a colonization that I needed more than 4 from the cards (unless, of course, I have the card that lets me add 3 cards to the total). If you need 5, your success rate is only 33% and the actions are just too precious. I think my opponents have followed the same philosophy, as I can't recall many such attempts in my games. The only exceptions I can think of were "Hail Mary" attempts at the end of the game, where their only shot at a chance to win was to make the low percentage play.
