Western Desert

How Do I Give
the Allies a Chance to Win?

by Laurent

If you can find the Clash of Armor scenario book "Rommel's Battles" (OOP I think but might find it used) there are a couple desert scenarios you might like. One, Gazala, has the British attacking one German force while another German force flanks them, arriving several turns into the game. The scenario includes rules for the dust clouds from moving vehicles screening the forces behind them. The second scenario, Sidi Omar, has British (well, Indian) infantry with infantry tank and 25 pdr support defending a hill against the Germans, with Crusader tanks coming to the rescue. There is also a US in Tunisia scenario (with British allies helping out) with a mixed force defending against a mixed assault. I've run the first scenario for friends and it's a bit lopsided unless the Brits are played very well (they weren't when I ran it) but more because of the situation than the equipment.

Another "resource" for scenarios is the old Avalon Hill boardgame Tobruk, which was really a set of miniatures rules on a board using lots (and lots and lots) of dicerolls. I always liked the scenarios in that. Martin's post reminded me of the scenario with three Matildas holding off (obliterating might be a better description) an Italian tank assault. There are more fair scenarios, and things like limited advanced ammunition (like APCR) were included.

Problems like 88's dominating a battlefield can be balanced by giving the Brits artillery, probably off board though maybe some lucky CS tanks, and some smoke rounds...the 88 can't hit what it can't see. Even without smoke rounds, a nice fat stationary artillery target explains why 88's weren't invulnerable in a fight. From what I've read 88's were very hard to set-up and tear down in the flak versions, so maybe make them take twice as long to load/unload as regular AT guns. The actual tanks were pretty even off and on. Fights before the Pz IIIJ might even be in favor of the Brits...this is why the 88's were forced into service as AT guns after all.

Hope some of that rambling helped.
