Mostly just focus on getting a useful trade good early and trading it (don't let others force you to ship it), don't waste your money on buying buildings that will not help cash flow, and don't look down on the bonus doubloon you get from taking a role that had not been taken the previous round --- these bonus doubloons are huge early on.
