Armchair General

Magazine Review

by Patrick Kelley

An excellent new historical/gaming magazine is now available-Armchair General. While it is not readily stated, I feel that there must be a connection to cable's History Channel.

There are tons of high-quality articles and Illustrations, interviews, and, of course, 'problem-solving' games in every issue. Two issues have been printed so far-and I have seen them in Target, Safeway, and other huge retailers, so availability shouldn't prove a problem for most. I subscribed right after reading the first issue-and my money is always tight! It's that good of a magazine, believe me. 'Problem-solving' games, for those of you unfamiliar with the term, present the reader with a set of facts (as they are generally known-and they may be, as in actual combat, incomplete or in error), a map or two of the area, and offer several choices for you to decide what action should next be taken. You select from those offered, turn to the appropriate page as indicated, and learn what resulted from your decisions. It is highly interesting, if only 'playable' (in the traditional sense of wargaming) one or two times. There are also additional games available at their website, and occasional contests involving games. I urge those of you who may be interested to seek out Armchair General at your local retailer or bookstore,or to go to www.armchairgeneral.com
