Need a Settlement Game?

New World

by Greg J. Schloesser

New World. The game does a nice job of recreating the atmosphere and problems faced by 15th & 16th century explorers. The drawbacks are:

1) The game is out of print. Copies should be able to be found on E-bay, though.

2) The game has some lengthy rules compared to most European and American games. If you are unfamiliar with hobby games, it make take you a while to digest them and understand the game.

3) The game can be fairly long, so likely won't be able to be played in a single classroom session. You might have to play it over a lengthier period of time.

Although not really applicable to the time period you have mentioned, I do think Settlers of Catan and its spin-offs -- particularly the Historical Scenarios -- would make good tools. On a basic level, it would give students and understanding of what is needed to build settlements and cities and how folks had to trade and barter to acquire the needed commodities. I think a good teacher could help their students learn some valuable lessons from the game.
