Wargame Core

by George Phillies

Another month, another issue.

This month, wargames are the core of our agenda. We have bunches of short reviews of published board wargames, together with some longer articles.

While there may be fewer board Wargamers out there, there are certainly not fewer board wargames being published. My modest collection just passed 3300 titles, some of which I can even find in the house that my collection deigns to share with me. I am indeed approaching the point at which I am going to need to move, to give my game and wargaming magazine collection (at a guess, 100 shelf-feet) the space it has earned.

If you hear of game conventions, please let me know about them. Some of our traditional sources are folding up. In particular the superb Midwest Wargames Association Newsletter has been purchased by a group that is merging it with Courier into a glossy large format magazine, and the MWAN convention and club articles seem to have faded from view.

I have been rather busy with all sorts of things, and must give notice that there is some possibility that due to remote family issues (I am well; other people are not) we may at some point have an unexpected hiatus.

Someday, I may even retire and have time to play some of the games that I own. On the other hand, I am reminded of a neighbor, who had briefly retired, who explained that he got a job because he needed the rest from all the things he was doing.

It does appear that there are more and more wargames being published in Europe, but it is not always easy to get good information on them in a timely way. Even with information, sourcing is difficult. For example, I am aware of one Soviet-period Russian board wargame, whose title appears to translate as “Global Raid”. Loosely speaking, it came in a shoebox. And for marketing, what you need is an adjustment to copyright law that makes it practical for libraries to stock games: they should be allowed to print fresh counters for each loan.

So Until Next Month...
