New Games: Essen Convention

Quick Overviews and Comments

by Ted Cheatham

Great time!! Here are some of the games we played with very quick comments.

Time Line

Cheapass. Not a bad little game for $3. A little chaotic board changing game that could suffer from analysis paralysis by the wrong people, but in the spirit of move and play it is fun. It will get repeated play. Keeper. And for $3 would be an acquisition. It is a shame it doesn't come in a good box with all the needed cubes and some sturdy tiles.

Steam Tunnel

Cheapass. Another decent $3 game of turning over and claiming tunnels. Pretty random tile flipping style game. Plays very quick and is a keeper.

Feurio

I did like this one. Quick tile laying position placement. After only one play I do see Doug's issue with the "1" tile and the fact that the fire forces position placement of new tiles is interesting. It is on the acquisition list.

China Moon

Very nice game similar to Hare and Tortoise. A quick racing game of frogs where you get two hops and attempt to collect flowers. You don't count occupied spaces so it makes for some nice positioning ideas and the special spaces on the board also add variety. This is on the will buy at the right time list.

Princes of the Renaissance

Was dying to play this one and it is a very interesting game. It took me much of the game to figure out what was going on and I still wasn't sure how to win. Strong gamers game deserving the good comments. This is a will buy at the right time.

Intrigue

We had a blast...I am one of those that does think this is an evil game, this being my third playing in probably 6 years. With the right group it is ok...I still cannot believe after $15,000 James still sent my man to the Isle of Despair.!!!!! ARRRGGHHH. This will probably become an acquisition as the new card game price is so good.

Finstere Fluere

Another one I really wanted to try. I put this one in the Papua, Viva Pamplona category of games. They are light, fun and good reason to make noise and mess with each other. This one does have some nice planning moves to force to monster to suck out other peoples brains which is cute. This will become a Halloween classic. This will go on the acquisition list at the right time.

Santiago

Decent bidding game...but was just too dry and abstract for my taste. Would happily play again but this one is a do not buy.

Spinergy

Story telling humor. This one needs the right crowd and then the stories get outrageous and the laughter flows. I already have a couple of story telling games and probably do not need another. Again, would happily play this one, but not on the buy list.

Logistica

I liked this one and I am not an overall fan of good delivery style games. We only played with three so it felt like a little more solitaire than I thought it should with little competing for cubes except near the very end. Also, I found it frustrating to get good use of all three of my transportation modes. This one needs another play and I think they did a good job for the style of game and the mechanics. This is a wait and see to a will buy at the right price game for me.

Kontor

Older Michael Sacht two player. The more I play it, the more I like it. It is not a great game but I don't think it is nearly as bad as the rap it got. You must play with the advanced rules and I add the special cards even in the two player game. Our game was extremely close coming down to the money tie breaker...only the fact that I got to play the last water card did I get the extra buck needed to win and it could have gone the other way. It is a keeper for me and only cost me $8. Put this one in the try before you buy category and I will be happy to show it to you.

Das Arketecturspiel

Many thanks to Craig and James for picking up a copy for me at Essen. Unfortunately, it is not a strong game. It is beautifully made. The art work and tiles are great and there is even a full booklet outlining the design and history of each of the buildings...too bad I cannot read German. It is very light fluff with a memory element and slight speed element. Thankfully, it does end quickly. It will hang around for a while and could be an ok opener as you wait for people to arrive or close out. Put this one in the do not buy category.

Smarty Party

The cute trivia game saw dinner time. If you like trivia games, this one is a nice twist. My only com-plaint is the deck is just too small in terms of number of questions because it has seen a lot of play. The bad thing is, I know I have done the card before but still cannot remember any of the answers. Because of the trivia nature...if you are not a trivia addict, I would try before you buy.
