HAIL CAESAR! Nicholas Benedict has won the 2003 CAESAR award symbolizing BPA's top competitor of the year. He amassed 113 laurels with wins in Britannia and - fi-tingly - Republic of Rome, while recording a second in Kingmaker and a fourth in Diplomacy to defeat Arthur Field who finished second with 98 laurels. http://www.boardgamers.org/caesar.htm BPA PBeM NEWS THE NAPOLEONIC WARS: BPA is pleased to announce the start of a new PBeM tournament for The Napoleonic Wars under the direction of Christopher Schwalm and using the ACTS site for card driven boardgames. The format will be single elimination, three-player games. Scheduled for a February 1st, 2004 start. Check out the details at http:// www.tc.umn.edu/~schw0516/Index.html. BITTER WOODS: The next Bitter Woods PBeM tournament, dedicated to the memory of John Grant Jr, will commence on January 5th. Those seeking an early start can do so on the eve of the battle, December 15th. See details at http://members.aol.com/bobmryan/BWHome.htm. SQUAD LEADER: BPA and the Squad Leader Academy (SQLA) announce two upcoming PBeM tournaments to begin 1/05/2004 for SQUAD LEADER and CROSS OF IRON. Both events are single elimination with seeding by AREA rating. As these events are single elimination, personal leader counters will not be used. SQL4th and COI4th rule-books will be used and supplemented by SQLA rule conven-tions and compiled Q/A. All games will be AREA rated, new members will be enrolled. SQLA will offer fee waiver to US military personal and others upon request. Rodney Kinney's Sun Java VSQL2.5 module for the freeware VASSAL engine (www.vassalengine.org) will be used as the tool for these events. VSQL2.5 has full COI capability and enables both PBEM and real time play. The inherent feature of Java is its computer platform independence (runs on Macintosh OS8+, Macintosh OSX, Windows all kinds, Linux, Unix). Games rounds will be on a two-month start schedule requiring dedicated effort for those still in the title hunt. BREAKOUT NORMANDY: BPA's third BKN PBeM tournament has just entered its fourth round with six survivors from the original field of 48 advancing. Assured of laurels are: Ken Nied, Bruno Passacantando, Jim Eliason, Tom Drueding, Henry Jones and Don Greenwood. Details are available at http://www.boardgamers.org/specific/ bknpbem.htm All BPA PBeM tournaments require BPA membership when the event starts. Associate Calendar year memberships enabling play in all PBeM events starting in that year cost only $10 and earn $10 discounts for pre-registered admission to all seven BPA gaming conferences. You need not keep your membership current in order to finish a PBeM event. Members are reminded they can upgrade their current member-ships at any time by remitting the additional funds.
