I played a AWI demo, or rather watched it being played very closely. The system alternates activating units. If you have more units than your opponent all of the extras go with your first unit. Units can do 2 things, 1 movement and 1 action. So, you can move and then fire for instance. You can also declare a reaction to an enemies movement and fire at them. A very nice system that seemed almost simultaneous. The charts for morale and firing were very detailed. I would say this game is not for someone looking for a simple system. Combat and morale used a d20, with low being good. Rolling a 20 caused you to rout or run low on ammo, both of which are very bad. Rolling a 1 improved your morale state or gave a chance at killing an officer. The basic rules are in the front of the book, and afterwards comes chapters detailing each different time period. Ranges, formations, troops types are given different stats. Our game had no cav, so I can not comment on that. Overall, I liked it quite a lot. My only reservation was the volume of modifiers, and the method of determining firepower seemed quite laborious. Back to Table of Contents -- Game! #1 To Game!
