A HOTT Campaign

Fantasy Wargaming

By Chris Nicole

I have added the Army lists from our PBM Umpire campaign "Interesting Times" to the Loran webpages:

    www.loran.karoo.net/campaign/armies.html

The Army lists are for Hordes of the Things/DBA. We used HoTT as the base rules for tabletop games with additional units from DBA for more variety in the troop types. The size of armies and location/setup of battles was worked out through PBM Umpire.

The tables give the PBM Umpire Units in UPPER CASE in the first column, then a brief description of the unit type, then the HotT/DBA unit type, DBA units are noted in italics.

After the main list there are alternatives for some of the units, these also list a proportion of the main force that can be the alternative unit type.

Also each nation started with three named generals, they could promote or hire other generals as needed. Generals acted as a unit on the tabletop as in HotT rules. There were also a few mercenary wizard generals that players could bid for to join their armies.

The campaign started in 1994 with monthly turns, wars, alliances, battles, plagues and assassinations. Cities were founded, be-seiged and pillaged, provinces were occupied, rebelled and re-occupied. Players left the game and new players took over their nations, old players came back.

The campaign is on hiatus at the moment, but it may come back or start up again some day. There are just a few changes I would make; In the initial game I set up the barbarian nations too strong, I would start them weaker but give them more opportunities to acquire territory before they come into conflict with civilisation. There should be more smaller un-alligned provinces on the fringes of the game at the start.
