Arnhem Refight

Wargaming WWII

By Fred Gillian

I recently played Arnhem at the wargames holiday centre near Scarborough, the game was played using Command Decision. The weekend was actually very enjoyable. Mr Ingham is a very nice chap and the huge tables and vast amount of figures around the room were inspiring.

However, the game was a little disappointing -- my friend played the Oosterbeek Paras trying to feed troops through to the bridge -- the Germans seemed to have far too much motorised kit (Panthers!!). I played (along with another chap) XXX Corp on the other table, but it was very unhistorical. The scenery was just generic and the opposition was Tiger I's (not JagdPZ IV's ) and reinforced by Jagdpanthers. CD was quite good at decimating my Shermans and the German player did his job very well however the mission seemed impossible.

I basically drove at full speed regardless of casualties and never got close to the end of the table which would have enabled me to get on the Arnhem table. It seemed a pointless exercise.

There was a bit of 'over-sportsmanship' happening on the Arnhem table (some would say cheating) which took the shine of it. I must say most of the gamers were faultless but it only takes one to spoil it -- he was a hardened member of the "toys out of the pram" club.

I don't mean to denigrate the place because I still really enjoyed the event -- but if it had been using Rapid Fire or another set of fast play rules and 30 Corp given a more historical set-up it could have been so much better.
