Relief of Al-Mashoug:
19 August 1988

Modern Wargaming:
Hypothetical Cold War

The Wargame

By Mark Pears

'The Relief of Al-Mashoug' can be played on a 12' x 6' table, but this could be extended to 14' or even 16' long if space permits. It portrays the final stage of the relief column's advance towards Al-Mashoug and the attempted withdrawal. Iranian forces are introduced in increasing numbers as the game progresses. To aid balance, the Challenger Battalion is based on strength after breakdowns.

OBJECTIVES

The German player has to make contact with 10th Mountain, spend one move loading the Relief HMMWV Column at the location of 10th Mountain HQ in Al-Mashoug and then cover the withdrawal of all UN units to the original start line. The Iranian/Soviet player has to prevent this.

If excessive casualties on the UN side blur the result (i.e. the UN player reaches safety but with a very heavily depleted force) then calculate the total UN losses in figures (adding 3 crew per knocked out tank or APC). If this is 70% or greater the UN player has lost.

SPECIAL RULE

Wadi`s and wooded areas are impassable to vehicles. In the case of small clumps of trees treat all the space between them as covered/ rough ground. On any turn the UN player rolls a 8+ on a D10 1 Tornado ground attack aircraft may make 3 passes (any armament) once only. On any turn the Iranian player rolls a 7+ on a D10 1 Phantom ground attack aircraft may make 2 passes (any armament) twice only.
