Gloster Meteor

WWII Service

By Rolf Hedges

The first dozen or so operational Meteor I's were delivered to No. 616 Squadron at Culmhead in July 1944. The unit moved to Manston where they flew operational sories against the V-1s over England. They destroyed their first one on August 4.

The squadron moved to Belgium and was joind by No. 504 Squadron flying Meteor III aircraft.

Meteor's were scrambled during the last week or so of the war to intercept some Me-262's. However weather was bad and contact wasn't made. The war ended before another chance occurred for the first ever jet vs. jet combat.

Meteors flew in large numbers in Korea and were badly outclassed by the MiG's. New Zealand pilots flew them also in Korea.
