Fear God and Dreadnought

Wargaming WWI Naval Actions

By M. Wright

Well I got my copy of FEAR GOD AND DREADNOUGHT today. Very well presented of course and a very heavy box because it has so much in it, but as usual the rule book is an inch thick.

There are however, some EXCELLENT scenarios in it, so I thought my group might play some of them out over the next few weeks.

There is a quite interesting range of scenario variation ranging from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, Atlantic, North Sea, Pacific, Indian Ocean, Africa, etc. I'm quite impressed with the scenario book. I wrote a few of them along with another wargamer from here, but the rest are from a wide range of wargamers and they have done an excellent job.

The retail price of this thing is going to be something like £ 40. Phew! But it does have coloured counters in there for the ships required in every scenario presented in the game. That alone is very expensive. You get a bloody great rule book. A 'big' scenario Book, a Data Annex Book and an Umpires guide, plus various dice. The DATA ANNEX, provides more information on the ships, their guns, torpedoes etc. plus aircraft of the era, than you would find in a dozen expensive reference books, so in that regard it is probably worth it. I cannot think of any 'single' reference book a wargamer could buy, that would include that much technical data in it and to obtain that much would cost a lot of money, so if only for that, it is probably worth every cent.

I'm glad I went to so much 'detail' trouble with the cover painting. It has come out very well and the design layout they did to go with it works really well. All Gold, Brass and Royal Blue. It all looks very nice and I can now understand what some of the people who emailed me about it, have been talking about.
