The German Freikorps 1918-23
Osprey Elite Number 76

Book Review

Review by Nigel Clarke

Written by Carlos Caballero Jurado and illustrated by Ramiro Bujeiro.

This work is the latest Osprey that deals with the era of the Great War and its immediate aftermath. The work starts off covering the collapse of the German government in 1918 and does a great job in explaining the whole Freikorps, Spartacist thing. It details the various insurrections and uprisings in the 1919 Civil War, the campaigns in the East with the White Russians. Passing on to 1920 it deals with the actions of the old Imperial Army forces comprising the Freikorps against the Republic before passing on to Silesia and the fighting against Poland in 1921. The final historical section covers the years 1922 and 23 with the French occupation of the Ruhr and the recollapse of law and order leading to the Munich 'Beerhall Putsch'.

There's a section explaining the various Freikorps units and their connections with the Army, their uniforms and equipment and their eventual transformation into the SA/SS of the Third Reich.

The plates are very nicely done with 7 plates of figures and three of insignia, flags and badges of rank. The plates are clearly explained by the artist and there is a decent bibliography although about half the works are in German or French.

If you have any interest in the immediate post Great War events in Europe this is a book to get. There isn't that much out there in English and this provides a concise and fairly complete introduction to the period.
