Armies in the Balkans 1914-18
Osprey Men-At-Arms 356

Book Review

Review by Nigel Clarke

by Nigel Thomas and Dusan Babac, illustrated by Darko Pavlovic, Osprey Publishing 2001

The book covers all the armies fighting in the Balkans from 1914 through 1918. It starts out with a brief 5 page section covering the various campaigns and then launches into short pieces on each army. Most of then are covered in a couple of pages but Turkish involvement only warrants a short paragraph. Each of the smaller combatants gets a half page or page giving an OOB of that country's army.

I've not seen any of the photos before but that doesn't mean that they are especially rare just not normally used. The plates are great with the Austrians getting one, the Serbians one, the Ottomans and Germans sharing one (1:2), the Montenegrans and British share one as well (2:1). The French, Italians and Russians share another plate (1:1:1) and the Bulgarians get one of their own as do the Greeks and the Rumanians.

Each Country entry covers the background to WWI for that country, the make-up of the army and most have a short section on campaigns fought by their troops.

In my opinion this book is worth it for the photos and the plates but you'll get more information on the countries and the fighting from other works if funds are tight.
