I have been advised today that GREAT WAR SPEARHEAD is on track to be published in late 2001. Written by Canadian Shawn Taylor, it follows the general principles of SPEARHEAD (WW2) but with individual bases representing a company. The TOE's Shawn sent me were so much like my own organization and many others I know, that I was delighted. I won't have to change anything to use these. The rules follow a basic style established by Arty Conliffe, that is quick to use and keeps things nice and simple. Yet I know, from having been privileged to help Shawn with WW1 research and information on weapons and their firepower, that he has brought in all the elements needed to reflect the difference between WW1 and WW2. Particularly important of course is that this is an artillery war, yet no gamer wants the wargame to bog down. Shawn has tackled this well, including gas attacks of early and later types. I have played a couple of tests and found them dead easy to learn. I predict they will be a great success, especially with those gamers who want to do some of the large, infantry intensive games so typical of WW1, yet get them over in a reasonable time frame.
