British Camouflage in the Balkans

WWII A10 and A13 Tanks

By Neil Patterson

I've just started reading Crisp's The Gods Were Neutral. His book has some hints on 3RTRs A10s & A13s (!) sent to Greece.

Initially on arrival in Egypt:

"....having their (the tanks) camouflage altered from the green and brown of padocked England to an exotic shade of red (!!) & yellow."

This sounds similar to the pre-war colour scheme of 11th Hussars in Egypt.

Later:

"...our tank camouflage was to be changed (for the 3rd time) from hot yellow to a more civilised olive-green effect,"

And on embarkation for Greece:

"...our A10s & A13s had been sprayed with broad, deceptive patterns of green"

On reading it almost sounds as if they had the yellow replaced by green, giving a red (brown?) & green striped effect, but I suspect he may mean a 2-tone green effect....
