Death Ground:
Today's American Infantry
in Battle

Book Review

reviewed by Perry Gelwasser

I have just read a new book by Col. Daniel Bolgar, USA called Death Ground: Today's American Infantry in Battle. My wife got me this one for my birthday (she said "it looked like something you would like"). Bolgar has written several other books including A Feast of Bones, a novel (darn good one) about Spetsnatz operations in Afganistan.

Anyway the new one covers about 15 different infantry oriented operations ranging from Panama, the Gulf War through Somolia, Hatti and Liberia (haven't seen if it gets into the Balkans) at one operation per chapter. Actions range from squad to battalion size. He has all the latest TO&Es as well as critiques of the various actions and includes some maps. He covers both U.S. Army and USMC. ISBN is 0-89141-671-4. Amazing stuff.

The 82nd Airborne's jump over Panama made me sweat bullets just reading it. The chapter on Task Force Tiger's (2nd U.S. Armor attached to USMC) fight at the Al Mutlaa Police Post in Kuwait would make a great skirmish scenerio and I'm painfully making my through the Ranger/Delta debacle in Somalia. BTW: Chapters on a Ranger raid in the gulf on a microwave relay station and the chapter on Somalia talk extensively about the little AH-6 gunships known as "Night Stalkers" .

Another one to add to the library .
