500th SS Paratroop Battalion

WWII TO&E Analysis

by M. Salter

The strength of each battalion's company, although not directly given in the book by James Lucas, can be worked out to be 120-150 men. There is no mention of heavy equipment, but a platoon from the 4th (usually the heavy) company was attached to the first assault wave, which suggests an MG platoon. The battalion did not jump/land by companies anyhow, but in smaller, object-oriented groups. These were:

1st Para-dropped wave (ca. 320 men):

Groups "Red", "Green", "Blue":

    Btn HQ , 2 , 3 Companies, 1 platoon from No. 4 company ( MG platoon ) , to seize Drvar .
    Glider-borne troops (ca. 320 men):
Group "Panther":110 men, to attack Tito's HQ
Groups "Greifer", "Stuermer", "Brecher", "Beisser":Total 140 men, to attack the foreign Military Missions
Group "Draufgaenger" : 50 SS paratroops plus various engineers etc, to attack the partisan communications network and HQ

The glider troops consisted of 1st and 4th Companies and various "Brandenburg", Luftwaffe and Bosnian troops.

2nd Para-dropped wave: 220 men, apparently a Fallschirm-Lehr Kompanie.
