Panzer III FlameThrower in Action

WWII

By R. Hedges

The official title of German army units using the Panzer Flamm Zug and as far as I'm aware they only had 7 Panzerflammwagen III, Kfz-1, M/C and a medium Truck as support vehicles. Some of the units below organised companies of 14 and as an educated guess these had 3 platoons of 4 plus 2 at CHQ 100 were built:

    28 to Pz Regt GD
    15 to Pz Regt 11
    14 of each to Pz Regts 1, 24 & 26
    7 each to Pz Regt 14 & 16
    1 to Panzer Schule Wunsdorf
GD transferred 13 to Pz Regt 15

At Kursk

6th Pz Div (Pz Regt 11) had had 14 in its 4th Kp (where the 15th were who knows?)
11th Pz Div (Pz Rg 15) had 7 with 1 bttn and 6 with another at BHQ
GD PzG Div had 7 with each BHQ
The other units were not at Kursk.

In October 43 14 & 24 Pz Division went to Russia.
14 Pz Div (Pz Regt 36) 7 with BHQ or RHQ (where did these come from as they are not on the original list?)
24 Pz Div (Pz Regt 24) 14 in a compnay directly controlled by RHQ - however a report from 1st Dec shows 2 operation PzFlWg , 2 in repair and 3 lost which only adds to 7 - so perhaps 14th Pz got the others?)

In November 1943 1st Pz went to Russia.
1st Pz (1 Pz Regt) 7 (probably) with RHQ

On 20th Aug the following units were in Italy
16th Pz Div (Pz Regt 2) 7 PzFlWg probably at RHQ
24 Pz Div (Pz Regt 24) 14 PzFlWg in company under RHQ
26 Pz Div (Pz Regt 26) 14 PzFlWg - distribution unknown

Some of the Flammpanzer were passed on to Pz eistatz kp 35 which is listed with 7. This later became Panzer Battalion 208.
