The Vietnam War
Australian Armour

Wargaming Using Command Decision Rules

by David Makin

Two types of Australian Armour was used in Vietnam.

Cavalry Squadron (APC) (Exp-Vet 9-10)

Sqn HQ, with 1 command stand and M113A1 (incl fitters APC)
    3 APC Troops, each with:
      1 command M113A1 {5} (w T-50 turret HMG, MG)
      2 M113A1 {4 each} (w T-50 turret 2 MG)

    1 Support Troop, with:

      1 M113A1 {6} and recon AT stand
      1 M113A1 81mm mtr {4}

The Recon AT stand is the AT-Surveillance troop, in Vietnam they would be more likely armed with M-60 MGs in place of IIRC Carl Gustav RCL and/or 106mm RCL. M113A1s entered Australian service from 1964 replacing Saracens. T-50 turrets became standard in 1967-68.

Medium Tank Squadron: (Exp-Vet 9-10)

    1 Command Dozer Centurian (20pdr)
    3-4 Centurians (20 pdr) (4 tps of 3 later 4 tanks)
1 support tracked supply vehicle (incl fitters M113)

NB: *No* Centurian was destroyed by RPG hits, a few were disabled. The vast majority of RPG hits failed to penetrate (though most did superficial damage).

In thick jungle a moving Centurion could not be heard at over 150 yards.

Ammunition expenditure: in one (not unusual) case a troop of Centurions in 15 minutes fired 80 x 20pdr Cannister and 14,000 rounds of MG.
