IRELAND

The Wild Geese Wargames Club: The Wild Geese Wargames Club came into being over twenty years ago, in Trinity College, Dublin, as a society of friends interested in military history, military modelling and the use of historical simulations to study aspects of military conflicts throughout history.

We have seen a dramatic growth in membership over the past year with current members numbering over thirty. Members range in age from 16 to 60 and are of various nationalities. We have an informal structure which suits the casual nature of the Club. At present we still meet in the Rathfarnham clubhouse every Monday night and are looking at the possibility of developing a second club night to facilitate members.

Membership Fees: At present we do not charge a membership fee. However, it has been suggested that a nominal fee be introduced this year in order to raise funds to cover our involvement in Wolfhound '99.

WOLFHOUND '99: Sunday 3rd October The Wild Geese Wargames Club is hosting "Wolfhound '99"; a day long event that will commemorate the Irish military tradition in a way that will engage the public imagination at all levels. "Wolfhound '99" will be an open access, non-profit event based on themes of Irish military tradition, ie: a. The Evolution of Warfare in Ireland b. The Irish Military Diaspora

It will draw together the skills and expertise of military historians, military modellers, historical wargamers and living history societies to stimulate and engage the public imagination by presenting them with a view of Irish warfare in a historically accurate, visually appealing and entertaining way.

It will involve the illustration of selected Irish battles and campaigns through the complimentary media of short, public lectures, historical simulations, military dioramas and 'living history' displays by selected historical re-enactment societies.

Lectures: The lectures will consist of 30 minute illustrated presentations on selected 'Irish' battles.

Wargames: Large scale wargames and simulations designed to compliment the lecture series will be presented by the Wild Geese Wargames Club and other wargames societies from Ireland, the U.K. and Northern Ireland.

Dioramas: These will be military subjects of an Irish interest.

Living History: Selected re-enactment societies are being invited to present 'living history' displays within the environs of the Museum.

Militaria: Displays of Irish related militaria will be provided.

National Museum: A complimentary display/exhibition will be provided by the National Museum.

GAELCON '99: Our oldest annual games event usually takes place on the October Bank Holiday weekend. Last year it was held in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin 4. A final date and venue are to be confirmed for 1999. This is more of a fun event and a good recruiting ground so, after the 'seriousness' of Wolfhound it will provide an opportunity for anyone wishing to run a 'fun' game.

IRISH GAMERS ASSOCIATION: A register of Irish gamers is being compiled by members of the GaelCon committee. More anon.
