Greek Units 1940

TO&E Infantry, Cavalry, Motorised

by Rolfe Hedges

The Greek Army eventually fielded 19 Infantry Divisions, numbered 1 through 18 and 20. The 20th was formed very late (just prior to the German attack) and consisted of only about 1 Regiment of Infantry and nothing else, while at about the same time the 12th Division had all 3 Infantry Regiments, but no heavy weapons or supporting arms.

Most other Divisions were complete, but well below strength due to prolonged fighting on the Albanian Front. Note that the Infantry Regiments are sometimes referred to as "Brigades" in some sources and in others it is suggested that the 3 Regiments in a Division were grouped under a "Brigade" HQ! (However this would seem unlikely).

1. RECON GROUP: The 11th Division had only 1 Sabre Squadron in it's Recon Group.
2. ATk COMPANY: The 8th Division was the only formation to actually have an ATk Company.
3. AA COMPANY: The 8th and 9th Divisions were the only formations to actually have AA Companies.
4. ARTILLERY REGIMENT: The 8th Division had all 3 Battalions equipped with 100mm Skoda Howitzers, while the 12th and 13th Divisions had all 3 Battalions equipped with 76mm Schneider - Danglis Howitzers.
Other. The 12th division in Thrace, only had a total of 6 battalions, 5 trucks and 1 car. The 20th division was almost composed of elderly reservists with no combat experience.

"INDEPENDENT" INFANTRY BRIGADES

There seems to have been only about 3 to 7 of these in existence at any one time. It is unclear whether these were simply independent Infantry Regiments ie. the terms Brigade and Regiment being used synonymously), or actual proper Brigades.

Probable organisations suggest they were equivalent to 1 battalion with no integral assets such as artillery (presumably Corps assets were attached). There're also references to "Reserve" Battalions so it is also possible that a Brigade was a single Regiment reinforced with 1 (or more) of these Battalions? Some of these units are designated frontier guards or Evzones.
