The latest venture by Games Workshop into the Historical arena is 'Warhammer Ancient Battles ', which at a first glance appears to be based on smaller battles with more emphasis on individual figures and their abilities. Hopefully this is a move away from DBM. I suspect it will help 'Wargames Foundry' promote the sales of their figures across a broader spectrum - to those who want excellent quality 28mm figures, but who cannot afford big budget armies. It will also allow you to recreate smaller skirmish scenarios like those 'Redoubt' tried to create with their Trojan wars range. I for one think it is a positive move, having just watched Michael Wood's BBC 2 series in the footsteps of 'Alexander the Great' ( also available on VHS video), the prospect of fighting real ancient battles is exciting, refighting Alexander's charge up a ladder into the' tower of blood' (a battle in India - cannot recall the name ) with only his bodyguards, (as the ladder broke) and using the Shield of Troy to protect himself are mouth watering. Even after seeing Michael Wood trying to recreate this. We also have rumours for a World War Two version, but I doubt this happen as wargames Foundry have no interest in figures for this period. Also Command Decision version 3 a set of World War Two rules hits the shelves. More on this in future issues.
