Los Cuatro Generates (The Four Generals)
The four insurgent generals,
At Christmas, holy evening,
Madrid, you wondrous city,
And all your tears of sorrow,
And all our old-age bondage, This Republican song disparages the "four insurgent generals" Franco, Mola, Varela, and Queipo de Llano. Each commanded one of the four columns advancing on Madrid. As mentioned elsewhere, Spanish fascists gave the name 'fifth column' to their own undercover agents behind the Loyalist lines who were cooperating with the four conventional columns.
Spanish heavens spread their brilliant starlight
[Chorus]
We'll not yield a foot to Franco's fascists, [Chorus]
Beat the drums! Bayonets, charge! [Chorus] This was the song of the Thaelmann Battalion, the first unit of the International Brigades to arrive in Spain.. In FWtBT, this unit is represented by the 2-6 Inf X 11 Th arriving Oct I 36. The unit fought well at Madrid in 1936 when Franco's army first threatened the city.
