A Winter War Replacement
and Rail Capacity Worksheet

Idea

By Frank Watson

In a recent game of AWW, our local group displayed some less than stellar replacement pool management and was often trying to collectively remember exactly who had been counted for special replacements, who had not, and how many replacements had been accumulated. On the following page is a worksheet to help in calculating replacements and managing the replacement function in A Winter War.

The November column is grayed as a reminder that this month is played only if the optional early start variant is played. This is not noted on the turn record track that comes with A WW. Starting what is supposed to be a historical scenario game in November has turned out to be a somewhat common mistake for new players. To emphasize the point, zeros are filled in for Nov 1139, but these can be overwritten for the early start variant.

Notice that to record losses you often have to work a turn "ahead" on the worksheet. For example, in the Soviet player turn of the initial Dec 1 39 turn, the Soviet player will record his losses in the Dec 11 39 column in the space labeled "Losses in preceding Soviet turn." The Finnish player will be recording his losses in the Dec 1 39 column. In his player turn, the Finnish player will record his losses in the Dec 1139 column in the space labeled "Losses in preceding Finnish turn."

The simple tally sheet below the replacement worksheet helps "track" rail capacity. Simply put in tick marks whenever a unit moves by rail. In the same A WW game mentioned above, the Soviet player achieved an impressive concentration just north of Ladoga by accidentally calculating low volume rail usage as high volume lines. Hence the reminder at the bottom of the worksheet.
