The Moon is Down. (1943, B&W, ***) Directed by Irving -Pichel, starring Cedric Hardwicke, Henry Travers, Lee J. Cobb, Dorris Bowden, Margaret Wycherly, Peter Van Eyck, William Post, Jr. Filmed during the war and based on the well-known John Steinbeck novel of the same name, this tale of resistance in occupied Norway succeeds nicely. Heroes of Telemark. (1965, Color, **1/2). Directed by Anthony Mann. Starring Kirk Douglas, Richard Harris, Michael Redgrave, Mervyn Johns, Eric Porter. A team of Allied commandos parachute into Norway. With the assistance of the Norwegian resistance, they blow up the Nazi's heavy water plant and stop German atomic research, based closely on the historical raid. One modern review of the movie calls it "predictable" one wonders if the surviving commandos agree. 633 Squadron. (1964, Collor, **1/2 , 105 minutes) Directed by Walter Grauman, starring Cliff Robertson, George Chakiris, Maria Perschy, Harry Andrews. An RAF Mosquito squadron takes on a special mission to bomb a well-protected German factory in Norway by collapsing an overhanging cliff. Less than dynamic portrayals by the leads slow this British film, but it does have a rousing theme. Above Us the Waves. (1955, B&W, ***) Directed by Ralph Thomas starring: John Mills, Donald Sinden, and James Robertson Justice. No, the title is not a version of the WWII sailors' saying "Join the Navy and ride the WAVEs." British midget submarines sneak into a Norwegian fjord to attack the battleship Tirpitz.
