Fokker's Last Fighter

?

By James A. Broshot

As the title of one of the articles in the bibliography indicates, the Fokker G.1, alias "the Mower," could be considered as "Fokker's Last Fighter." However, the last Fokker fighter design was the DXXIII, a unique fighter, the first such design to feature a retractable nose-wheel landing gear, that foreshadowed the Dornier Do335 Pfeil, as it was powered by two engines, one in the nose and one in the tail. The prototype reached a speed of 326 mph in June 1939 and with newer engines the production version could have reached 385 mph. The sole prototype was destroyed on May 10, 1940, in the German attack on the Netherlands which also put an end to any production plans.
