On March 23, 1939, German troops seized the Memel region from Lithuania. This was Hitler's last bloodless conquest. Memel was awarded to Lithuania in 1919 by the Versailles Treaty. Germany took this territory to secure its northern flank around Poland and to bring pressure on that country to give back the Danzig corridor.
