79th Arm XX

Europa Side Trips

by Frank Watson

The famous 79th Armoured Division, whose specialized tanks or 'funnies' are so well known for the D-Day exploits, rarely fought in the organization shown in Second Front. Its component battalions were task assigned to assault units to provide better integration during the actual assault. The brigade representation in SF works well, however, in giving the Allies benefits of the units with little clutter. In general, 30th Armoured X used flail tanks for minefield clearing, 1st Assault X used AVRE engineering assault vehicles, 31st Armoured X used Crocodile flamethrowing tanks, and 334 Armoured X used LVT amphibious vehicles, called Buffnaloes in British parlance. In this "Europa as History" we have rather arbitrarily assigned one brigade to each of the British beaches.
