Verbal Abuse

Smile When You Say That
Finnish Locations

by Frank Watson

What did Dno and Mga do with their vowels? I think the Varangians took them as loot and left them in Viipuri. Two consecutive i's? Nothing is supposed to have two consecutive i's. Say:

    VEE - puh - ree

or something close and you'll be respectable. While you're there, try the ice-fishing at Lake:

    LAH duh guh

Remember that, even if you've just finished playing "Battle for Rome," Ladoga does not rhyme with "Get your foot off mah TOE-gah."

It's sister is either Lake:

    oh - NEE - gah
    or
    oh - NEH - gah

depending on where you look. A reasonable approximation for the Finnish city that is Europa-zoned industrial is:

    TAHM - peh - reh

It does not rhyme with "damn beer." If you're ever in the area of 35:4305, remember that you did not read any particular recommendation in TEM for any of the hotels in:

    PEH - troe - zah - VOTSK

For those last two cities you should probably roll the r's a little bit if it doesn't embarass you.

And if any of these pronunciation are wrong, it's not my fault. I got 'em straight from the dictionary.
