The following is the draft order of battle for the Free French ground forces in Second Front. It tracks the forces by theater (MTO: Mediterranean Theater of Operations; ETO: European Theater of Operations), from July 1943 to the end of the war. The Free French had many small, independent regiments and battalions. Where possible, I have grouped these units into composite brigades, such as artillery, static, and construction brigades. OptionalFrench Motorized Division: The French planned to reorganize the 1st Free French Division as a motorized division and send it to Italy. However, the British rejected this plan, based on logistical reasons, and requested that the division be organized and equipped along U.S. lines. Had the French plan been accepted, use the following in place of the French 8-8 Inf XX 1 M.

Aug II 44 Transfer to ETO: 1x 8-10 Mot XX 1 Notes:1. The 1-8 Marine X Choc is the Free French Shock Brigade. Factored into it are the two Free French commando battalions that occasionally show up in French OBs.2. The static RM brigades are composite units factoring in the various weak regiments and battalions raised in the French Military Regions following the Liberation. 3. The former Vichy forces of North Africa and Colonne Leclerc (Free French 1-8 Mot III L from Western Desert) were reorganized during or after the Tunisian campaign, starting in April 1943. This tends to be complicated, especially for the former Vichy forces, as they needed to be reorganized, re-equipped, and retrained. Colonne Leclerc in the spring of 1943 became the 2nd Light Free French Division (2e Division Legere Francaise Libre). It is unclear what "Light" means--perhaps motorized, perhaps something else. Other Free French, French North African, and French East African elements joined Leclerc to form this division. 2nd Light was not apparently operational, and became 2nd Armored Division (2e Division Blind6e) in August 1943, and was still equipping and training until spring 1944. Brigade Legere Mecanique (BLM-A from Torch) in May 1943, with other elements, became the 1st Armored Division (1e Division Blind6e). Officially organized the same as a British armored division (one armored brigade and one infantry brigade), in actual operations it reorganized into three combat commands. (it spent the rest of 1943 equipping and training.) The other French North African forces went through a more complicated evolution. In general, they returned to their garrison stations in the spring of 1943, and then individual regiments and battalions were selected to be organized, equipped, and trained as the French expeditionary forces. These elements formed the 2nd Moroccan Inf XX (2e Division Infanterie Marocaine), 3rd Algerian Inf XX (3e DIA), 4th Moroccan Mtn XX (4e DMM), 5th Arm XX (5e DB), and 9th Colonial Inf XX (9e DIC ) .
