by Ben Knight
No unit is an island, entire of itself; -every unit is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a counter be washed away by the CRT, Europa is the less, as well as if a stack were, as well as if an army of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any unit's death diminishes me because I am involved in wargaming, and therefore never send to know for whom the die rolls; it rolls for thee.--Devotions upon Nonphasing Occasions (if Ernest Hemingway can plagiarize John Donne, so can I.) I'd like to welcome Gary Stagliano to the TEN team. Besides handling some of the editorial duties, Gary will be busy generating material of his own for TEN. Perhaps you're wondering where the member list is this issue. With over 500 members and still growing, the EPA list became too cumbersome to include with the newsletter. In place of it, however, GR/D now provides a Contact Service. See "Matchmaker" on page 3 for details. The post of Europa rules questions answerer recently became vacant with the departure of Brad Hay from GDW. GR/D has arranged for Ben Knight (who, me?) to fill the vacancy. If you have any rules questions, mail them to my address below and I'll answer them. Include an SASE. ETO has announced its "Project 50" to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of WWII. According to ETO editor Bill Stone, this will be "a six-year program of OBs, scenarios, and rules modules researched and designed by talented Europa gamers and published to coincide with key dates from the invasion of Poland to VE Day." Hope you made it to Origins in August. I did, only to lose Moscow and Leningrad (St. Petersburg, actually) to His Majesty Bill "Trust Me" Stone in a game of Diplomacy. Other participants in the game were John Astell AtatUrk, Kaiser Kevin Brown of GDW, President Russ Lockwood, Emporer Mark Mod, and irredentist King Tibor Vari --all Europa players. There wasn't space this issue for the second installment of "Narvik Report," the playback of an ongoing Europa-by-Mail game of Narvik. We'll run that next time for sure. Also coming up soon is a superbly researched article by Louis Rotundo, "The Creation of Soviet Reserves and the 1941 Campaign." Jay Kaufman will kick off "Home Front" with some house rules he and his friends use, and James Broshot has some recommendations for improving Western Desert. Plus morel But ... TEN is always looking for new submissions. We publish letters ("EXchange"), house rules tested and used by your gaming group ("Home Front"), and articles of any variety (and title). Payment rate for articles and house rules is 500 per quarter-column of 9 point type ($2 per column, $6 per page). Please type or computer print your manuscript and if possible identify the type size and font used (e.g., this is 9 point helvetica). If you're using a Macintosh, please send your submission on disk and we'll re turn the disk to you.
