It's How You Play the Game

Map Alignment

by Randy Carrenne

In this brief article I wish to propose a solution to what can be a very frustrating nuisance--the proper alignment of the maps. For a large game like Fire in the East getting the one-hex overlaps just right is tough enough, but keeping them straight over the course of a rough-and-tumble game can be nigh impossible. Solutions such as stapling the maps to a huge sheet of cardboard or taping them together may suffice for the short term, but when the time arrives to pick the game up you're it, for big trouble. Every type of tape I have tried tears the maps when you go to separate them later, and where are you going to store a piece of cardboard the size of six full-size Europa maps?

What allows pin-point positioning of overlaps, keeps the maps in place during play, and disassembles without hassle or damage when the game is over? Tack-a-Note adhesive stick by Dennison. It can be obtained anywhere office supplies are sold at a very modest price. Tack-a-Note, when applied like lipstick along the edges of the maps, makes the paper self-sticking and removable just like Post-It notes (the famous yellow stickies). Applying a liberal amount will ensure that the maps stay together through all but the roughest handling.. It works great on smaller games like Balkan Front as well. Give it a try!
