Memorial On St. Patrick's day, March 17, Harold Andrews succumbed to cancer. He had been fighting leukemia for the past year. I had been keeping in touch with him over the course of the year. For a time it appeared as though he was going into remission, but that was not to be the case. Harold Andrews was my friend and I am going to miss him. We had a long history of working together on various projects. He would call me from time to time after he was diagnosed with cancer. Even with the knowledge that he was seriously ill, he continued to contribute. He was working on a scenario for the magazine which we will publish at a later time. For now, please remember him. This is but a small tribute to his help and friendship. NOTICE As Origins '93 draws near we have a total of five individuals who have signed up for the Leningrad: 1941 tournament that appears later in this issue. If we do not have a minimum of 16 participants, we will not be able to conduct the tournament. The decision will be made at the time the convention opens, Thursday, July 1, 1993. A complete list of participants will be available at that time for public inspection. The official rules appear in this issue of the magazine and this information appears there as well. Each person who has signed up for Origins will receive notification from a company called GEMCO That company is responsible for the "paperwork". We will keep the list and make sure that you have been given the proper credit, credentials, and the like. More Origins Stuff At this time, Shelby Stanton and David Hughes have notified me that they will be attending the convention. Both will be giving seminars along with Rick, John, Victor, and yours truly. The Europafest location is still being set, but it appears that we will have our own area for the open Europa gaming, tournament, and demos. I will keep you informed as this develops. At this time we have the following individuals signed up for Europafest. An asterisk indicates that the individual has also signed up for the tournament:
Alan Conrad Robert Gesling* C.A. Janiec Richie Johns Victoras Kaufmann* Karl Soderholtz* David Burt Robin Roberts Chris Lundvall* James Vandine Jeffrey Vandine Product License From time to time we receive requests to license products. We look at everything submitted for a license. There are two types of license. Individual license granted to said same for products that are ad-ons to existing games. In these cases there is little money involved and these products reflect the care and concern the individual has for the Europa system. This is a different license than the one we grant for companies engaged in commercial production and sale. We have had requests from several companies to do computer products related to Europa. In each case we review these products. Some of them are under review at this time. Now we have received a request to produce new counters for Fire In The East/Scorched Earth from Terry Shrum, formerly of FGA. The request was made by a company called C&M Hobbies and offers us a certain amount of money, a percentage, for the right to produce replacement counters for the game and module. If we agree to do this product it will be based on a couple of things. First, we wish to preserve the image and integrity of the system, and to that end we preview anything that may become commercially attached to Europa. Second, we wish to make sure that we are paid if we grant the license. Those of you who are involved in the licensing process know exactly what I am talking about, the rest of you don't want to know. We will be in the review process on this matter for the next couple of weeks. For your information, if you have a product you want reviewed, send it to me at G/RD and mark the outside envelope - PRODUCT REVIEW. For the record, we own the copyrights and trademarks for the games and properties known as Europa and Glory, The Pacific Campaign 1939-1945. If you do any professional writing, reviewing, or publish anything that refers to either of those trademarks you are required to note that they are the property of Game Research/Design. The game titles are not trademarks, only the systems' titles represent the trademarks: Europa & Glory.
