GR/D Briefing

Past and Future

by Winston Hamilton

Tonks for the memories:

This issue is full of letters from all of you. We wanted to clear the deck for 1993, so Victor and Rick decided to answer a bunch of the letters we have received. In this assortment is another letter by Mr. Tonks from Australia. Victor gives a response from his perspective. Since Mr. Tonks directs some comments at me, I would like to say just a couple of things, some of which are repeats of statements I've made before:

Second Front is the next game to come out.

We are not diverting John Astell, Rick Gayler, Victor Hauser, or any other personnel to work on our new series, Glory.

SF will contain the upgraded maps, rules, OBs, and all the rest.

If it were not for continued assistance from GDW there would be no more Europa. And that's the truth.

Finally, the Collector Series of new titles are the last printings of the series. They are also the final and only printing of those games.

End of another year:

Another year, six issues of the magazine, a new game, a schedule for the remainder of the series, a new series in the Pacific, plans for the next Europafest laid out, and a first-ever Europa tourney. Not too bad for this past year's effort. The nice thing is that some of the other games like: For Whom The Bell Tolls, Narvik, War In The Desert, and the Czech game are all under way by various individuals around the community which means that after SF is done, our ability to finish the series by 1995-6 looks good.

I believe that the final revision of Fire In The East/Scorched Earth/ Urals will be quite a remarkable game and draw the Europa series to a fitting end.

As we stated some time ago and as I restate here, if you became a member of the Association during 1992 you will receive the 1945 Soviets for use with SF AFTER we get SF out the door. That is your 1992 freebie.

For 1993, each member of the Association will receive another perk for being a member. This free offering will be a counter sheet containing every German Korps that operated during WWII. That's every Army, Airforce, and SS Korps. In addition, we have a choice to offer you along with this countersheet. Either we'll give you a sheet containing a variety of colored (primarily hit) markers, or we'll upgrade the existing Luftwaffe units from other games using updated ratings and printed in LW light blue. We'd like to know which of these options you prefer. Each of you who calls GRD will be asked that question over the next few months and we'll then determine which additional countersheet you'll get by the results we get from this survey.

You're welcome to write us and give us your preference if you wish, but it's not really necessary since we typically talk to over 150 Association members per month.

So, how about this?

Since we are in the production stream for SF at this time we have the capability of producing SF map sets very soon.

And this?

Would you be interested in getting your hands on a set of these maps as soon as they are ready? We did this, in a way, when we produced First To Fight and our thinking is that you might want to get a set of maps as soon as they are available. The map set [total of 4] would be available to members of the Association for $15, they would also be available to other Europa players for $20 per set. This idea was spawned in our last company meeting.

In addition to the maps we will be publishing a scenario in TEM #29, the first of the 1993 issues. In this scenario you'll be able to set-up and play First To Fight with a potential French reaction on the Western Front. The dreaded (by the Germans) two-front war in 1939 ...

Jason Long agreed to design this scenario so we can give you something to pass the time as the clock ticks towards completion of the big one.

This is the first place we are discussing this offer. You will be seeing the offer in TEM #29 for real. The maps should be done at that time. Stay tuned.

And this?

In the next thirty days or so we plan to reprint A Winter War since we sold out the first printing. The next print run will contain corrected maps as well as some extras. If you were one of the Association members that bought a 1st printing game we will have a corrected map available for you. There will be a coupon in the next issue of the magazine for you to send in to get a corrected map.

Those of you who are not Association members will also be able to get a replacement map for $3.00 which will cover the cost of the shipping and handling. Look for this offer in the next issue of the magazine.

And finally...

Once again it's time for me to wish all of you season's greetings and to offer you my thanks for the support you have given this company for the past five years. I am sure that I speak for all the staff who toil to bring this all to life. You know, when I was 13 and playing Tactics II. I thought to myself, boy I would give anything to work for a wargame company. Now I are one. And it's great!

That's it for 1992. Thanks again for your help and support.
