The recent offering from GR/D of John Astell's The Europa Almanac was most welcome indeed. It has proven to be very valuable in updating and correcting my own database for Europa cities. In particular, the listings fo Italy (for which maps are not yet available) and the Soviet Union (off-map locations) have allowed me to updat before the fact. In reviewing the material, I came across the following discrepancies. Be it known that my ow list was far more inaccurate.

Note 1: The cities of Katowice and Sosnowiec are transposed on Map 13. Map 13A will correct their placement. A.E Goodwin argues that the two cities actually fall inside the same hex. Hold the phone! -Ed.

The Europa Almanac is very well done and was a pleasant surprise. Of course it is unavoidable that such a compilation will have some omissions and errors. Here is what I spotted on first reading and offer to Europa fans for addition. Maybe the Almanac will even become such a bestseller that an update can be printed at some future time.

Among the very few errors I found:

3 : 13A:1113, the Danish name is Kobenhavn.
9 : The Italian name for Switzerland is Swizzera.
7 : The Monegasques are not an ethnic group.
7 : 16A:1318 = Recklinghausen (typo).
9 &16 : 13A:3606, the German name is Kalisch (typo).
10 : The USSR had a sizable German ethnic minority.
14 16 : The Russian name is Baranovichi.
15 : All Baltic countries had sizable German ethnic minorities.
16 : 1B:3831+, the German name is Warschau.
20 : Andorrans are not an ethnic group; but Catalans are.
20 : The only major ethnic group in Italy is German (South Tyrol).
21 : Sanmarinese are not an ethnic group.
21 : No Swiss ethnic group in Vatican City or anywhere (although the Pope has a Swiss Guard).
22 : Maroc Francaise is correct; eliminate the question mark.
27 : 22:1901, the entry should read "Tehran (or Teheran)"

A very welcome feature is the listing of names in languages other than the respective 1939 official one, since many historical accounts use these names. In fact, since there is ample space in the Almanac, this could reasonably be carried farther. Here are suggested additions:

Strangely, of the tsarist names of Soviet cities, only one or two are mentioned. It would be nice to have the old names at least for the major cities: Leningrad = ger: Petrograd and eng: St. Petersburg, Kalinin = Tver, Gorkiy = Nizhniy Novgorod, Sverdlovsk = Ekaterinburg, Stalingrad = Tsaritsin, and Stalino = Yusovka.

And to add yet a few more items to the listing of czarist names for other cities: Kirov = Vyatka, Kuybyshev = Samara, Engels = Pokrovsk, Krasnodar = Ekaterinodar, Voroshilovsk = Stavropol, Ordzhonikidze = Vladikavkaz, Leninakan = Alexandropol, and Kirovabad = Elizavetpol.
