Argentina: (1935) Defence; The Navy consists of 2 battleships, “Moreno” and “Rivadavia” (reconstructed in 1925), 5 destroyer leaders, 4 destroyers, 4 coast defence ships and auxiliary vessels, 2 light cruisers (7,000 tons) and 3 submarines. Strength about 800 officers and 14,000 men. The first naval region is at Puerto Belgrano, near Bahia Blanca, and there are minor bases at Mar del Plata and Puerto Deseado; there is a naval dockyard at Buenos Aires, with two graving docks. The naval aviation base is at Puerto Belgrano, with a subsidiary base at Punta Indio. The Army is organised in 5 divisions, and numbers about 1,500 officers and 25,000 men on a peace footing. Each division would consist of about 40,000 men on a war footing. The military aviation bases are at El Palomar (B.A.), Los Tamarindos (Mendoza), and Paraná (Entre Rios). In 1933 the military air force consisted of 3 Reconnaissance Groups, 2 Fighter Groups and 2 Light Bomber Groups; there is an aircraft factory at Cordoba. Argentina: (1951) Defence; The Army is organised in 6 divisions, and numbers about 3,000 officers, 5,000 N.C.O’s. and 34,000 men on peace footing. In 1940 the military air force consisted of 3 regiments (heavy bomber, light bomber and fighter) and one reconnaissance group; there is an aircraft factory at Cordoba. Brazil: (1935) Defence: The peace effective of the Army is about 54,000 all ranks. The Navy consists of 2 Dreadnoughts, 1 battleship, 11 destroyers, 1 tender, 4 submarines, and some small vessels and aircraft. Number of first line aircraft 100, total of aircraft 150. Brazil: (1951) Defence; The peace effective of the Army is about 200,000 all ranks. The Navy consists of 1 battleship, 15 destroyers and escorts, 12 corvettes and trawlers, 4 submarines, 18 submarine chasers, 1 destroyer depot ship, 2 sail training ships, 3 ocean-going tugs, 2 surveying vessels, 2 river monitors and various auxiliaries. The strength of the Navy is about 25,000 officers and men. The Air Force has about 800 aircraft, and it is the largest in South America. Chile: (1935) Defence; All able-bodied male citizens from 19th to 45th year must serve in the army for a training period. The peace effective of the active army is 10,413 (1933). The Air Force has a peace strength of 65 machines with 150 pilots and 1,000 mechanics. The Navy consists of 1 battleship (recently renovated), 1 ironclad, 3 cruisers, 11 destroyers and 10 submarines, with a compliment of 632 officers and 7,217 other ranks. Number of first line aircraft 105, total number of aircraft 150. Chile: (1951) Defence; All able-bodied male citizens from 19th to 45th year must serve in the army for a training period. The effectives of the active army in 1949 were 1,853 officers and 22,692 other ranks. The Air Force has a peace strength of 111 machines with 330 officers and 3,000 other ranks. The Navy consists of 1 battleship, 1 cruiser, 6 destroyers, 3 frigates, 3 corvettes, 7 submarines and various other small vessels, with a complement of 915 officers and 9,330 other ranks. Colombia: (1935) Defence; The standing army consists of about 10,000 men. Number of first line aircraft 15, total number of aircraft 15. Colombia: (1951) Defence; The Navy consists of 2 destroyers, 7 gun-boats and some small craft, with personnel 2,260, the standing army consists of about 12,500 men Costa Rica: (1935) Defence; No data. Costa Rica; (1951) Defence; On December 1, 1948, the Army was abolished, the President declaring it unnecessary, as the country loved peace. Cuba: (1935) Defence; No data. Two gunboats and a number of torpedo boats patrol inland waters. Peru: (1935) Defence; The Naval Air Force maintains services to Iquitos and other places in the interior, National Air Mails are carried by Peruvian military machines. The Army is recruited by voluntary enlistment, supplemented by conscription, and numbers about 8,000 of all ranks; the Navy includes 2 cruisers built at Barrow, 3 destroyers and 4 submarines.
