Colonel John R. Elting

Obituary

by by Terry D. Hooker

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the death of Colonel John R. Elting, he passed away at home on the 25th May, anybody who knew him will know that he will surely be missed on the military historians scene.

I first saw his work in issues of the Company of Military Historians Journal way back in 1968, while working at Tradition in London and obtaining photocopies of his various articles that dealt with Latin America, mainly Mexico. As he had produced these articles plus his interest in Mexico it was obvious that I would make him an Honorary Member of the Society.

I finally met him in Annapolis at a Company meeting some 6 years ago, and two years ago he helped me to edit some of the Company article to produce the 1st and 2nd booklets, the second one will soon be at the printers, it is on the Maximilian period 1861-67 in Mexico. He was often seen in Europe and the States at shows and conventions, he was over in London in February this year for a Napoleonic Convention, not bad for a guy aged in his eighties, he will be missed by all of us who either knew him or read his books.
